Once carved, they would typically be glazed blue or green and then fired. The most common stone used for scarabs was a form of steatite , a soft stone which becomes hard when fired forming enstatite.

Hardstone scarabs were also made and the stones most commonly used were green jasper , amethyst and carnelian. While the majority of scarabs would originally have been green or blue the coloured glazes used have often either become discoloured or have been lost, leaving most steatite scarabs appearing white or brown.

Scarabs were often of very light color. In ancient Egyptian religion, the sun god Ra is seen to roll across the sky each day, transforming bodies and souls.

Beetles of the Scarabaeidae family dung beetle roll dung into a ball as food and as a brood chamber in which to lay eggs; this way, the larvae hatch and are immediately surrounded by food.

For these reasons the scarab was seen as a symbol of this heavenly cycle and of the idea of rebirth or regeneration.

The Egyptian god Khepri, Ra as the rising sun, was often depicted as a scarab beetle or as a scarab beetle-headed man. The ancient Egyptians believed that Khepri renewed the sun every day before rolling it above the horizon, then carried it through the other world after sunset, only to renew it, again, the next day.

A golden scarab of Nefertiti was discovered in the Uluburun wreck. In the Middle Kingdom scarabs were also engraved with the names and titles of officials and used as official seals.

These "wish" scarabs are often difficult to translate. Amenhotep III immediate predecessor of Akhnaten is famous for having commemorative scarabs made.

These were large mostly between 3. They are beautifully crafted scarabs, apparently created under royal supervision or control and carry lengthy inscriptions describing one of five important events in his reign and all of which mention his queen, Tiye.

These large scarabs continued and developed an earlier Eighteenth Dynasty tradition of making scarabs celebrating specific royal achievements, such as the erection of obelisks at major temples during the reign of Thuthmosis III.

The tradition was revived centuries later during the Twenty-fifth Dynasty , when the Kushite pharaoh Shabaka BCE had large scarabs made commemorating his victories in imitation of those produced for Amenhotep III.

There are, however, three types of specifically funerary scarabs, heart scarabs , pectoral scarabs and naturalistic scarabs.

Heart scarabs became popular in the early New Kingdom and remained in use until the Third Intermediate Period. The base of a heart scarab was usually carved, either directly or on a gold plate fixed to the base, with hieroglyphs which name the deceased and repeat some or all of spell 30B from the Egyptian Book of the Dead.

It is often suggested that the heart is being commanded not to give false evidence but the opposite may be true. The Book of the Dead requires the heart scarab to be made of green nemehef stone but a variety of green or dark coloured stones were used.

These were mainly made from faience and glazed blue. The association of pectoral scarabs appears to be with the god Khepri , who is often depicted in the same form.

A third kind of funerary scarab is the naturalistic scarab. Groups of these funerary scarabs, often made from different materials, formed part of the battery of amulets which protected mummies in the Late Period.

When a person died and went to their final judgment, the gods of the underworld would ask many detailed and intricate questions which had to be answered precisely and ritually, according to "The Egyptian Book of the Dead.

As a result, the priests would read the questions and their appropriate answers to the beetle, which would then be killed, mummified, and placed in the ear of the deceased.

When the gods then asked their questions, the ghostly scarab would whisper the correct answer into the ear of the supplicant, who could then answer the gods wisely and correctly.

Scarabs are often found inscribed with the names of pharaohs and more rarely with the names of their queens and other members of the royal family.

Generally, the better established and longer reigning a king was, the more scarabs are found bearing one or more of his names.

Most scarabs bearing a royal name can reasonably be dated to the period in which the person named lived. However, there are a number of important exceptions.

Scarabs are found bearing the names of pharaohs of the Old Kingdom particularly of well-known kings such as Khufu , Khafra and Unas.

It is now believed these were produced in later periods, most probably during the Twenty-fifth Dynasty or Twenty-sixth Dynasty , when there was considerable interest in and imitation of the works of great kings of the past.

Many of these scarabs do date from the long and successful reign of this great warrior pharaoh, or shortly thereafter but many, perhaps the majority, probably do not.

Like all pharaohs, Thuthmosis was regarded as a god after his death. Unlike most pharaohs his cult, centered on his mortuary temple, seems to have continued for years, if not centuries.

As a result, many scarabs bearing the inscription Men Kheper Re are likely to commemorate Thuthmosis III but may have been produced hundreds of years later.

Later pharaohs adopted the same throne name including Piye of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty, BCE and this can lead to confusion.

The hieroglyphs making Men Kheper Re seem to have become regarded as a protective charm in themselves and were inscribed on scarabs without any specific reference to Thuthmosis III.

It can be doubted that in many cases the carver understood the meaning of the inscription but reproduced it blindly.

On a lesser scale the same may be true of the throne name of Rameses II BCE User Maat Re "the justice of Ra is powerful" , which is commonly found on scarabs which otherwise do not appear to date from his reign.

The birth names of pharaohs were also popular names among private individuals and so, for example, a scarab simply bearing the name "Amenhotep" need not be associated with any particular king who also bore that name.

Like blinking O-ring or Fiend Hunter. The card advantage, tribal synergies, and commander tax dodge is all just icing.

They just never quite did enough for me. True, the hexproof also makes voltron elements more attractive for Lazav. In any case I added your input into the list of pros for Lazav.

I wanna build this guy as a UB Feldon, with a focus on text rather than big bodies. Zombie subtheme for sure but most certainly not the focus.

Oh boy, I was thinking that the activated abilities of the new gods were a bit over-costed and more like icing on the cake, and that their static ability would be what makes you play them in the first place, but then comes this guy!

Well since they printed the processors I have always wanted to find a way to use their ability, of the top of my head they also work quite nicely with [[Roon]] and [[Wrexial]] but I think that is about it.

Now this is a zombie Commander I can get behind. Unlike GNG I feel like I can do something that functions worthwhile and actually stand a chance against my opponents.

And honestly I like this a lot better then the Scorpion God Card. Hmmm if it only it were that simple. I am not building them Wrong I promise you that.

Great for you if you can get a functioning deck out of GnG I tried many times and gave up. And in general with graveyard decks for that matter.

And then I found Prossh! This looks pretty awesome. Both of them encourage you to play in a way that gets value off their abilities, but have a tribal line on them too.

Granted, this guy actually has a zombie payoff unlike Olivia who had no vampire payoff , but I see myself mostly playing a controlling deck with value creatures to abuse his second ability.

First ability is good, but I see it more as incidental value - i. Mulldrifter and Shriekmaw are auto-includes, as value creatures that also dispose of themselves.

Duplicant and Phyrexian Ingester are just straight improvements with his ability. He and his zombies ensure Stubborn Denial.

I used to have a Phenax mill deck that was lots of fun, and this is already making me excited to get back into the mill plan! Thoughts of using guys like [[oracle of dust]] who return stuff from exile so you can reuse opponents creatures?

Or is that too much mana and work. This guy might not make it to tier 1, but he will easily be in tier 2. Think about extra turns with him is nutso.

The scry ability alone allows you to make it easy to mil your eldrazi titans and reanimate them very quickly.

This guy could be VERY strong if built right. Its static effect is like a worse Graveborn Muse, but still a great effect. This is definitely super powerful.

Also a great commander for straight UB control, no zombies required. And either way, this guy is windmill slam going into the That activated ability is absurd.

One, it exiles creatures from any graveyard, not just your own. Two, it copies that creature with so many benefits: Having recursion every turn is ridiculous on a lot of levels.

Karador is a popular commander for a reason. Scrying on upkeep and exiling cards for tokens is good, but recurring [[Sidis, Undead Vizier]] or [[Gary, Merchant of Asphodel]] or [[Corpse Augur]] etc.

I guess this guy is better if you want to go zombie aggro, but zombie aggro is far and away the worst way to build zombies in EDH.

This guy can bring back anything from any graveyard as a zombie. How is that not better than Gisa and Geralf that only target your graveyard once a turn?

That changes things a lot. Denying your opponents resources is a big deal in magic and especially commander. Stax as an archetype is proof of this.

Imagine playing this God against Meren. He attempts to use his trigger to reanimate a target, but you use your Gods ability in response to not only exile the creature he targeted, preventing him from ever abusing it again, but bring it over to your side of the table as well!

You literally steal a creature from your opponents yard, bring it over to yours, and prevent your opponent from ever using it again. With this God, every creature card in every graveyard is a potential threat.

The icing on the top of this beautiful cake is that fact that the God recurs himself. Ignoring counterspells and well-timed Graveyard Exile you never pay commander tax on this guy.

Hell, even if you do, how many times will an entire table both counterspell him and or exile your graveyard so consistently that you do end up paying a huge tax for him?

At least Karador has a way to reduce the cost of casting him during a game. You could easily assemble infinite combos with a tutor every turn.

And there are lots of ways to find her and put her into the graveyard. So, I think that if you are like me and hate playing or playing against combo decks or, like me, play in a casual meta , the The Scarab God is the best zombie commander.

This guy can also recur stuff at instant speed and can do so multiple times a turn, neither of which the Cecani twins can do. They cater at different angles to the same crowd, but I still contend that The Scarab God has a higher potential power level in isolation.

But I value having repeated access to powerful effects much higher than one-shots. Yeah, but he provides so many other items than just the eternanalize trigger.

The Scry, life loss and ability to dodge the commander tax is huge. Like I said, an argument can be made. I honestly think you are not being objective about this, since you have a GnG deck.

From an outsider perspective, this card easily edges out GnG, because it just does so much more than GnG. You keep bringing up the ability to Sidisi every turn, but that is a pipe dream in most groups where people pack exile effects and graveyard hate.

You can recur multiple creatures not zombies, creatures They attack on different angles. Oh, and if an enemy tries to scoop up their creature once you throw it back in the Yard?

I have a problem. Yup, that pretty much sums up my Shirei deck. Meta speed, grave-hate, and general aggro level all play a role. Sure, but in general, aggro is just a much worse strategy than combo or midrange, even in casual metas, because of how the format scales.

Also, if your meta is full of graveyard hate, any zombie build is gonna be kinda bad, because even the most aggro zombie builds have some amount of graveyard interaction.

Why is everyone talking about Zombie tribal though? This card screams "draw-go" to me. Might have to make some accommodations and switch over Chainer to this.

Adding blue gives decent access to a few counters, rift, etc. Exiling on activation makes some of the wincons in Chainer a bit more difficult as well, as recurring kokusho and Gary is really limited to only once.

Pretty interesting card that you can build in a lot of different directions. The obvious one is straight tribal but I actually think going a reanimator route is probably just better.

Here is a quick list I made up after seeing it. I based it off of my Chainer list, with a bit of blue for security.

It is all about recurring value with etb effects. It is a bit lighter in sac effects as I think they will be a bit less needed, and there is a bit more focus on life gain with exquisite blood.

Are there any cards I may have overlooked that are definite adds? It was all off the top of my head so I may have not thought of some value cards.

He could be your "hidden commander" if you like. I do not know if you are familiar with the concept, but usually you hear people talk about hidden commanders such as five color [[Marchesa the Black Rose]] or five color [[Nekusar]], where the card your deck revolves around is not the actual commander but instead is hidden in the Usually I think it is not really worth it to play these kind of deck, but in this case these gods have recursion already built-in, which could make great candidates to be played as hidden commanders.

He is great support for sidisi imo: Drain with your zombie tokens, scry for a ton, generate tokens, copy a creature from any graveyard.

He is not in sultai however and there is just too much power in GB so I wil run sidisi over this guy any day. I absolutely love this card.

Currently, the commander is Gisa and Geralf. Soon, the commander will be The Scarab God. If I was unsure about Grimgrin vs. Amazing EDH card, both as a commander and as 1 of the Lazav loves this guy, for example.
